Services

Learning Objects Network (LON) strives to bridge the gap between "thought leadership" and "implementation leadership" when it comes to reusable learning object business practices, evolving business models, SCORM-conformant networks, and updated production processes. Our services include:

1. Registry Services

2. Professional Services

3. Content Conversion Services and Tools

4. Network Services

Registry Services

The LON Registry enables high value content owners to securely manage their content assets (learning objects) in local repositories while enabling them to be easily found and securely delivered anywhere on the Internet.

This service enables publishers, defense contractors and agencies, corporations, and universities to make sure their valuable assets can be conveniently located and used by their customers.

When a content owner registers a learning object with the LON Registry, LON provides a unique, persistent, global identifier, which serves as an "electronic homing device" for locating the object in the sea of content on the Internet. The identifier used is the Digital Object Identifier (DOI), which was developed by the international publishing industry. The DOI is an ISO/NISO Standard.

Upon registration, the LON Registry issues a DOI, collects the learning object's metadata, and records the current URL location of the object. The object's location and metadata is then aggregated in a searchable repository, which enables potential users to locate the object with an efficient metadata search. This promises greatly improved searching and browsing over current Internet search methods. Once a user has located content they wish to use, the LON Registry directs a user to the proper source for the content.

The LON Registry has been specifically designed to store IMS and SCORM-conformant metadata and meets the current specifications for IEEE Learning Object Metadata.

LON has been appointed the Registry Agent for learning objects by the International DOI Foundation - an organization founded and supported by the major international publishing companies.

"An immense and ever-increasing wealth of knowledge is scattered about the world today; knowledge that would probably suffice to solve all the mighty difficulties of our age, but it is dispersed and unorganized. We need a sort of mutual clearinghouse; a depot where knowledge and ideas are received, sorted, summarized, digested, clarified and improved."
H.G. Wells (1940)

Network Services

LON is building the Internet infrastructure to enable the Department of Defense (DoD) and their key suppliers, including the major international publishers, to achieve content portability, interoperability, and networkability.

The first phase of this effort is being conducted under a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) with the DoD's Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) initiative to develop a prototype network of distributed SCORM-conformant repositories and search services.

LON's initial network services offerings are focused on implementing "private" networks for the defense industry including defense agencies and their key suppliers. Network functionality will include digital object registry, distributed search, server authentication, and transaction processing.

Later phases will extend network functionality to other industries and will include digital rights management, user profiles, and secure payment and delivery for complete end-to-end content delivery services.

The LON infrastructure is a utility that runs in the background of commercial processes connecting users with content through a variety of software applications such as Learning Management Systems (LMS's), Course Management Systems (CMS's), and digital asset repositories. These connections are made using open standards - ultimately creating a knowledge management layer for the Internet.
