Registry Services
The LON Registry enables
high value content owners to securely manage their
content assets (learning objects) in local
repositories while enabling them to be easily
found and securely delivered anywhere on the
Internet.
This service enables
publishers, defense contractors and agencies,
corporations, and universities to make sure their
valuable assets can be conveniently located and
used by their customers.
When a content owner
registers a learning object with the LON Registry,
LON provides a unique, persistent, global
identifier, which serves as an "electronic
homing device" for locating the object in the
sea of content on the Internet. The identifier
used is the Digital Object Identifier (DOI), which
was developed by the international publishing
industry. The DOI is an ISO/NISO Standard.
Upon registration, the LON
Registry issues a DOI, collects the learning
object's metadata, and records the current URL
location of the object. The object's location and
metadata is then aggregated in a searchable
repository, which enables potential users to
locate the object with an efficient metadata
search. This promises greatly improved searching
and browsing over current Internet search methods.
Once a user has located content they wish to use,
the LON Registry directs a user to the proper
source for the content.
The LON Registry has been
specifically designed to store IMS and
SCORM-conformant metadata and meets the current
specifications for IEEE Learning Object Metadata.
LON has been appointed the
Registry Agent for learning objects by the
International DOI Foundation - an organization
founded and supported by the major international
publishing companies.
