About Us

Learning Objects Network, Inc.  (LON) is an Internet infrastructure company enabling secure commerce in high value digital content. LON supports the Department of Defense’s Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) initiative’s goals of providing learning content anywhere, anytime, through content that is Granular, Reusable, Interoperable, and Networkable (GRIN).

LON provides consulting services to help publishers and defense contractors to create granular, reusable, and interoperable content and the LON Registry and network services to enable it to be networkable. Our vision is to create a knowledge management layer for the Internet.

Founded in 2000, LON and its management team have gained specialized expertise through a number of key initiatives:

1. LON is working with the Advanced Distributed Learning initiative at the US Department of Defense through a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) to design and build a testbed distributed network of SCORM-conformant repositories and search capabilities.

2. Through a strategic partnership with the Association of American Publishers (AAP), LON is supporting the commercial adoption of SCORM-conformant learning objects. LON is working closely with publishing leaders to enhance the value of their information assets and support their critical business needs. LON is leading a number of working groups with the AAP aimed at involving publishers and content users in establishing the standards and business rules for digital content in eLearning.

3. LON has been appointed as a Registration Agency by the International DOI Foundation, an organization founded by major publishing trade bodies. LON's commercial learning object registry service enables content to be easily searched, located and retrieved anywhere on the network.

4. LON participates in the Digital Repositories Working Group of the IMS Global Learning Consortium (IMS) where LON is active in the development and harmonization of specifications for learning object repositories, search services and messaging services.
